The low carbon teams split up to begin their 30-Hour low carbon missions.

Officiating guests, Low Carbon Champions together with the "Low Carbon Teams" officiated at the Opening Ceremony at Lok Fu Plaza.

With sunshine and good weather ahead, the low carbon teams set off energetically at the Green Wall at Lok Fu Plaza for the 30-Hour competition.

The 30 low carbon teams relied on their team spirit to complete a series of low carbon missions in The Link's shopping centres during the 30-hour marathon event, including a Low Carbon decathlon.

The Link supports sustainable development by incorporating low carbon, energy efficient solutions into our daily operations, and has utilized its shopping centres to hold a range of activities to promote a green lifestyle. This year, The Link, Commercial Radio and World Green Organisation jointly held the 30-Hour Low Carbon Campaign, which attracted over 100 members of the public to form “low carbon teams”, including the last year’s champions, to compete in a 30-hour Environmental Marathon Event running from today through tomorrow (9-10 August). The Link and the Commercial Radio DJ teams are also participating in the event, experiencing a green life first hand and spreading the green message to the public.

At today’s (9 August) opening ceremony, George Hongchoy, CEO of The Link, Hilda Wong, Head of Marketing of The Link, Stephen Chan, Commercial Radio, Rita Chan, General Manager of Commercial Radio, Dr William Yu, CEO of the World Green Organisation, the Low-Carbon Champions and participating teams, took an oath at Lok Fu Plaza, which marked the launch of the 30-Hour Low Carbon Campaign.

Low carbon teams completed a series of green missions during the 30-hour marathon

At the opening ceremony, officiating guests oversaw the oath-taking ceremony, and pounded a huge drum, marking the kick-off of the 30-Hour Low Carbon Campaign. The low carbon teams split up to complete green missions in The Link’s shopping centres all over Hong Kong. Missions were spread across Tin Shui Wai, Tseung Kwan O and Choi Wan on the first day, and teams competed against one another to finish green challenges in the shopping centres. The climax of the day was the “Low Carbon Night” at Gilwell Campsite on Fei Ngo Shan, where the low carbon teams, exhausted after the day’s challenges, had to take their showers in the shortest possible time, produce musical instruments using green materials, and live a low carbon life in the campsite. Not only did the challenges require strong team spirit and creativity, some of the missions such as Decedents of the Earth and Low Carbon Charades had to be completed by interacting with the public, which helped to spread the low carbon message. (Please refer to the attachment for mission details)

George Hongchoy, CEO of The Link, said, “We believe in the importance of sustainable development in the community, therefore we have committed our resources to promoting a green lifestyle, and have continuously worked towards achieving this goal. The Link, for the second time, has been included in the FTSE4Good Index Series, confirming The Link’s compliance with internationally recognized social responsibility standards. The 30-Hour Low Carbon Campaign is one of our flagship events of the year, and leveraging the event’s popularity and our extensive shopping centre network, we hope that the public will understand the importance of living a green lifestyle in bringing a positive change to society.”

Stephen Chan from Commercial Radio, said, “The commitment made by the 30 low carbon teams to protect the environment enables them to stand out from others, and marks their place in the 30-Hour Low Carbon Campaign. In the next 30 hours, they will overcome difficulties together as a team, pass all missions, and plant a green hope for our community.”

Dr. William Yu, CEO of the World Green Organisation, said, “I hope that the 30-Hour Low Carbon Campaign will help everyone choose their own low carbon lifestyle, so that even after the 30-hour mission, every day will be “low carbon” to continue to protect the world’s environment.”

The winner will be determined tomorrow
Low Carbon Journey to Japan awarded to the winning low carbon teams

The 30-hour Environmental Marathon will continue tomorrow (10 August), and will be more challenging, testing the team’s will and environmental sense. To show our appreciation for the efforts of the low carbon teams in promoting environmental protection, the 30-Hour Low Carbon Closing Concert will be held tomorrow in Lok Fu Plaza at 4:30pm. Renowned guest singers and bands will perform in the concert, witnessing the announcement of the winners of the 30-Hour Low Carbon Campaign.

The four winning teams will join a “Low Carbon Journey” in Japan, gaining exposure to advanced green technologies and architecture, and experiencing an innovative low carbon concept.
