Cycling is a fun and healthy way to explore Hong Kong. This August, Link will organise its first cycling competition, the Tour de LINK, in six of its malls. This thrilling competition encourages participants to relish the joy of exercising and optimise their health. To mark the occasion, Channel 823 has selected three biking routes that will take cyclists on scenic tours of different parts of Hong Kong to help them enjoy some two-wheeled fun in the sun.
Extending from Tiu Keng Leng to Lohas Park, this well-constructed bicycle path along the Tseung Kwan O Promenade is 6.5 kilometres long. The promenade faces the waterfront areas of Tseung Kwan O and Lei Yue Mun as it travels along the river bay near the Oscar by the Sea residential development.
With countless fishing boats moored by the dock, cyclists can take a break and appreciate the scenery of the fishing harbour, including scenic views of the horizon where the sea meets the sky – already a popular place for Instagram snaps. If you would like to experience even more, it is strongly recommended to cycle further to the waterfront park and cross the bridge to reach Lohas Park. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, you can go even further to Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate to enjoy the greenery of High Junk Peak.
Link’s TKO Gateway, Choi Ming Shopping Centre and Nam Fung Plaza are surrounded by the Tseung Kwan O Waterfront Promenade. If you want to buy refreshments or any supplies before setting off, these malls will perfectly fit your needs. Here are two suggested routes:
If you set off from Choi Ming Shopping Centre and pass by Hong Kong Design Institute via Keng Leng Road, turn onto Tong Yin Street at the junction and you will reach the Tiu Keng Leng section of the promenade.
If you set off from TKO Gateway, you can walk from Tong Ming Street to Hong Po Road (Hang Hau direction). There you can see the Hong Kong Velodrome and Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground. Walk along the right side and you can reach the cycling section opposite to Oscar by the Sea after passing through the roundabout.
Hong Kong’s most well-known cycle paths are the classical rural routes near Shatin and Yuen Long. However, some bike-friendly paths are also scattered throughout the urban area of Hong Kong. One of the more notable examples is in Po Kong Village Road Park, which features an elevated, looped cycling track of about 1 kilometre in length and 6 metres in width. All age groups are welcomed, although helmets are required for cyclists when using the track.
If you are an enthusiast of freestyle BMX, skateboarding, inline skating or scootering, the park also includes a spectacular, not-to-be-missed skate park consisting of a skate bowl and several half-pipes and ledges.
If you head off from Tsz Wan Shan Shopping Centre, you can walk along Yuk Wah Crescent and turn onto Po Tin Lane. Crossing Fung Lai Road, you will then arrive at Po Kong Village Road Park.
If you’re looking for a safe place to teach your children how to ride a bike, Siu Sai Wan Road Garden provides a supportive learning environment. Although the cycle path is only about 240 metres in length, it is broad and is designated for children to practise their riding.
Moreover, there are simulated road signs so that children can enhance their awareness of road safety while burning off their energy. If your kids get tired after cycling, take them to grab a snack at nearby Siu Sai Wan Plaza, or pop into the fresh market to buy groceries and make the most of your afternoon together.
If travelling from Siu Sai Wan Plaza, you will arrive at Siu Sai Wan Road Garden in approximately 5 minutes by walking towards the left of Siu Sai Wan Road.
