After more than a year of enlightening Hong Kong residents on sustainability and environmental issues, Link Sustainability Lab is launching a new theme this summer: “Loop to Last – Unveiling the Circular Economy.” This theme addresses various everyday topics such as climate change, sustainable fashion, overpackaging, marine litter, e-waste recycling, waste-to-energy and nature-based solutions. The exhibition also offers immersive experiences and interactive games. Use our illustrated guide to explore the exhibition and learn more about the circular economy!
Step into a 270-degree immersive experience zone, and feel like you’re in a movie. In this space, you can witness an Earth plagued by irresponsible resource exploitation and empathise with its agony. By moving your body, control the projected images and randomly experience four types of extreme weather: storms, wildfires, droughts and torrential rains.
Don’t be alarmed by the title. This exhibition zone, curated by the Lab and the Business Environment Council, presents nine key statistics about the circular economy and introduces seven zero-waste actions. It is the ideal place to get inspired to reduce landfill waste in your daily life and alleviate the planet’s burden.
Whether it is for daily shopping or gift-giving, attractive packaging increases the appeal of products. However, excessive packaging has become a growing concern. Showcasing sustainable packaging materials such as mycelium and honeycomb paper, this zone introduces practical packaging methods along with seven smart tips to avoid overpackaging.
Gain a new perspective on the intricate relationship between environmental protection, sustainability and daily life. The Lab and A Plastic Ocean Foundation showcase a variety of sustainable materials, including timber, bamboo, hyphae and discarded fishing nets, transformed into soft and durable clothing, accessories and other products. These innovative materials reduce our dependence on traditional materials like cotton, animal leather and polyester fibres, thereby minimising their environmental impact. Discover how a bit of creativity can make sustainable fashion even more stylish!
At the Beach Litter Reclamation Station, the Lab and A Plastic Ocean Foundation display waste collected by volunteers from Hong Kong’s waters and beaches – some of which may surprise you! Parents can also take their children to the Treasures in the Sand area, where they can search for “treasures” in a sandpit while learning about the negative impact of toys made from plastic, metal, paint and electronic components on marine life.
Furthermore, the Lab has also collaborated with students from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Fashion Design programme at the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) to create a massive fabric wall with the theme “Beautiful Ocean”. This wall, which has been crafted from regenerated blended cotton made from recycled polyester fibres and woven using electric knitting techniques and recycled yarn, highlights the constantly growing significance of recycling and regeneration.
The Lab’s games have long been popular with visitors of all ages. it’s now time to move your limbs and relax!
People in Hong Kong are inseparable from their devices. While technology improves our lives, it also produces a significant amount of electronic waste. The Lab has joined hands with WEEE · PARK to introduce the recycling value of various waste electronic products, as well as the harm that irresponsible disposal inflicts upon humans and the environment at large.
As you move through the exhibition, visit the Institute of BioResources, co-hosted by the Lab and A Plastic Ocean Foundation. Here, you can don a lab coat, step into the role of a scientist and explore how South American black soldier flies decompose food waste to promote the circular economy. Additionally, you can use a microscope to observe microalgae, which are widely used in food, health products, cosmetics and bioplastics. You can also appreciate various bamboo species. This section of the exhibition demonstrates how these three bioresources help humans address numerous environmental challenges.
Conclude your exhibition tour at Fairly Goods, a green product concept store sponsored by Link and operated by the charity Read-Cycling. Proceeds, after operating costs are deducted, will go towards Read-Cycling’s Free Books Programmes, supporting the distribution of used books to schools and communities in need.
