Following the trend in electronic payments, The Link Management Limited (“The Link”) has joined with Octopus Cards Limited (“OCL”) to improve the competitiveness of traditional fresh markets by installing Octopus payment facility at Tai Yuen Market. Nearly 90% of the operators of Tai Yuen Market have installed and used the Octopus facilities and received training in the system. Customers are happy with the convenience of using fewer coins, as well as more hygienic transactions. Since the installation of the Octopus, operators’ business turnover has gone up.
In the first 2 weeks of December, the number of Octopus card transactions at Tai Yuen Market was already higher than November, with a daily average increase of 200 per cent. During the same period, weekend spending saw a fourfold increase. These figures show that Octopus payments are favoured by customers, and the system has succeeded in attracting more patronage and higher spending.
To encourage greater use of the Octopus system, The Link and OCL have launched a promotional campaign, “Beep Beep Beep…Shop with Ease”. From now until 31 December, customers using Octopus cards at Tai Yuen Market will have the chance to win fabulous prizes by presenting two receipts (of any amount) issued by two different operators on the same day of purchase.
During consultation by The Link, a majority of shop tenants said they supported the introduction of the Octopus payment facilities and believed they would make the fresh market more vibrant. The Link will continue to enhance facilities and services at Tai Yuen Market.
Also at Tai Yuen Market, The Link Tenant Academy held a themed talk, “New Trends in Market F&B” on 15 December. Over 30 tenants attended the talk, which was presented by famous gourmet Walter Kei. He shared useful tips on trends in F&B, modern operation models of markets and shop displays, as well as ideas on how to be more competitive and attract more customers. All tenants responded enthusiastically to the talk, which is one of a number of free talks and workshops organised by The Link to help tenants learn about market trends and acquire business skills.
