The Link joined with the Hong Kong Ambassador of Design (“HKAoD”) and renowned local artist Michael Lau at Lok Fu Plaza today to launch Project Moon, an initiative of DETOUR 2012 designed to bring the arts into the community.
 
For Project Moon, Michael Lau has created three art installations (Moon Welcome, Moon Watch and Moon Seek) to be exhibited at The Link’s shopping malls. All three artworks will be open to the public during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
 
Officiating at the kick-off ceremony were Mr Alan Lo, Chairman of the Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design; Ms Hilda Wong, Head of Marketing, The Link Management Limited; and artist Mr Michael Lau.  Mr Alan Lo said at the ceremony, “DETOUR, the annual flagship programme of the Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design, is now in its seventh year. This year, the theme of DETOUR 2012 is Design Renegade. We are honoured to have Ms Justine Topfer as the Curator of DETOUR 2012. Justine, based in San Francisco, is a curator and the author of the Out Of The Box Projects.”
 
Bringing Arts into the Community
 
One of the favourite festivals in the Chinese calendar, the Mid-Autumn festival is usually associated with lanterns and families celebrating the full moon.  With Michael Lau’s three creative pieces, art lovers will be able to enjoy this festival from a fresh new perspective.
 
The three art installations will be displayed at three shopping centres under The Link from 8 September to 7 October.  Moon Welcome will be shown at Leung King Plaza in Tuen Mun, and Moon Watch and Moon Seek will be displayed at Lok Fu Plaza in Kowloon and Tin Shui Shopping Centre in Tin Shui Wai respectively.  Starting from 10 October, all three works will be exhibited at Lok Fu Plaza.
 
Michael Lau’s Limited Edition Lanterns
 
During the exhibition a mascot will tour The Link’s shopping malls, and traditional piglet treats will be distributed as gifts. The Link will also offer a limited edition lantern, the Moon Watch, designed by Michael Lau. This lantern can be transformed into a table lamp and will make an ideal collectable item.
 
A series of creative public workshops will also be held by HKAoD in partnership with various arts groups, including students from the HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity, traditional craft master Paul Chan, The Cave Creative Workshop and KaCaMa Design Lab, which specialises in products made from recycled materials.
