The Link Management Limited ("The Link"), in cooperation with over 10 green partners, has launched the "Eco Terrace" green community project at the Lok Fu Plaza UG2 Podium. Under the project, The Link collaborates with architect Mr Humphrey Wong, Sustainable Ecological Ethical Development Foundation and The Organic Farm to set up Hong Kong's first-ever Green Terrace in an urban district, where over 3,000 pots of nearly 10,000 sets of organic vegetables are planted for free viewing by the public from today (22 May) up to end of this July. During the period, a host of activities including organic farming classes, Green Academy, Farmers' Market, Tai Chi Workshops and Neighborhood Guided Tours will be held to encourage active participation by nearby residents, community organizations and Hong Kong citizens.
In addition, an art piece titled "Kowloon Walled City Epitome" created by Mr. Douglas Young, founder of G.O.D., will be exhibited at the field for Hong Kong citizens to reminisce the unique features and flavors of the old-time Kowloon Walled City. (Please refer to the attached Eco Terrace Fact Sheet for further details)
Mr. Edward Yau, Secretary for the Environment, officiating at the opening ceremony of the "Eco Terrace", said, "If we are willing to explore new ideas, it is as simple as achievable to create green space in urban community. Locally produced food has lower carbon footprint than imported food because they do not require long shipping and transportation process. By changing the menu of our daily meals, we can already reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of Hong Kong, which is an effective means to address the global climate change problem.”
Mr Edward Yau added, “I am very glad that The Link Management Limited joined hands with a group of green partners to organize green and organic community activities at the community level. I hope this green force can continue to go deep into the community and develop a low-carbon, environmental, healthy and green community with the residents.”
Mr. George Hongchoy, Chief Executive Officer of The Link Management Limited, is highly supportive of the green organic community conservation programmes organized by shopping malls under The Link. He said, "Pitching in the efforts of carbon dioxide reduction and energy conservation in commercial buildings, The Link has saved over 18 million kilowatts of electricity in its properties during the last financial year, through various measures in its daily operations. This is equivalent to cutting the release of 10.2 million kilograms of carbon dioxide. We will introduce more environmental protection concepts in our future asset enhancement projects, including greening of rooftops, utilization of energy-saving systems, and providing more outdoor public areas."
Partners co-organizing the series of Eco Terrace organic and environmental protection programmes with The Link include: Sustainable Ecological Ethical Development Foundation, The Organic Farm, architect Mr Humphrey Wong, G.O.D. Founder Mr Douglas Young, YMCA, HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity, Munsang College, community history consultant Dr. Joseph Ting, Hong Kong Architecture Centre, Hong Kong Commercial Radio 881, UNY and the Joy Luck House Restaurant.
The Eco Terrace green community project provides a wide array of free environmental protection educational programmes and workshops. These are aimed at encouraging nearby residents to actively participate and enjoy green living on the one hand, and supporting the exploration of cultural relics and historical assets in the neighborhood to foster stronger community bonding and synergy on the other.
