CLP Power Senior Director of Customer Success and Experience Lena Low (left) and Link Managing Director - Sustainability and Risk Governance Calvin Kwan receive the Corporate Energy Management Award for the Asia-Pacific Rim region from the Association of Energy Engineers at a ceremony in Tennessee in the United States.

CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) and Link Asset Management Limited (Link) have been presented with the Corporate Energy Management Award for the Asia-Pacific Rim region by the United States-based Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) for their successful partnership implementing decarbonisation and electrification projects at Link properties and promoting sustainable business practices to tenants.

The partnership includes the provision of retro-commissioning advice and funding from the CLP Eco Building Fund by CLP Power for the installation at 54 Link properties of innovative AI-powered energy management systems which collect and analyse real-time data from shopping malls to predict and adjust air conditioning temperatures, enhancing the buildings’ energy savings and decarbonisation performance. Over the past five years, CLP Power has helped to save more than 31 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity at Link properties, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 7,800 households and a reduction of around 12,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Buildings account for around 90% of Hong Kong’s total electricity consumption, making energy saving in buildings a key factor in reducing carbon emissions. CLP Power offered energy audit services to 130 Link properties in Hong Kong, including shopping malls and car parks, and recommended a range of effective energy-saving solutions. Link also replaced cooling systems with higher energy efficiency models in shopping malls with the support of a variety of subsidy schemes. In addition, CLP Power has provided training in retro-commissioning for Link’s energy management team to enable them to further improve the efficiency of cooling systems in shopping malls.

With CLP Power’s technical support, Link is on track to achieve its target of providing 3,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points at its car parks by the end of this year. CLP Power set up an all-electric kitchen in the Sustainable Cha Chaan Teng demonstration unit at the Link Sustainability Lab’s “Take Eat Seriously” debut exhibition in April 2023 to showcase the energy saving benefits of electric cooking. CLP Power and Link have meanwhile jointly organised workshops to promote energy saving and carbon reduction to more than 1,000 tenants, raising awareness of a range of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues.

CLP Power Managing Director Joseph Law said he was honoured to see CLP Power win an Asia-Pacific award from AEE for the sixth consecutive year. “Commercial use accounts for more than 65% of Hong Kong’s total electricity consumption,” he pointed out. “CLP Power is committed to helping commercial and industrial customers improve their energy efficiency to reduce Hong Kong's overall carbon emissions. This award recognises our efforts in promoting corporate energy saving and carbon reduction.” Link has achieved remarkable results by promoting low-carbon business practices to its tenants in partnership with CLP Power, Law added. “CLP Power will continue to utilise its power expertise to promote the use of innovative technology for energy saving and carbon reduction in different industries, working in partnership with the business sector to help Hong Kong achieve its goal of carbon neutrality before 2050,” he added.

Greg Chubb, Link Chief Operating Officer Ex. Mainland China said, “Link believes strongly in the sustainable development of its business. This award is testament to the joint efforts of Link and CLP Power in achieving carbon neutrality and sustainability. We have successfully implemented a broad range of energy-saving and electrification solutions in our premises, further improving energy efficiency and accelerating carbon reduction. We will continue to actively work with our tenants and stakeholders to promote the concept of sustainable development.”

The AEE is a non-profit professional society with over 17,000 members in more than 125 countries. Its annual awards programme recognises individuals and organisations worldwide for their achievements in the energy industry.
