Link “Differently Together” – People’s Stories

Hong Kong is a diverse society where people from different ethnicities, cultural backgrounds, and lifestyles thrive together. By identifying the target people in the video and through their stories below, we can understand more about the mix of cultures that has made our city special.

Indonesian

Khodijah

Khodijah is one of the 140,000 Indonesians living in Hong Kong, which is the second-largest ethnic minority group in the city according to the 2021 Population Census. Being a Muslim means she needs to perform five daily prayers. When there is no prayer room around, she will just have to improvise and find somewhere quiet.

The freedom of religion enjoyed by Hong Kongers also applies to immigrants. They can continue to practise their religious belief and rites after moving to the city. Take Muslims as an example, each year they have a fasting month called Ramadan, during which they must refrain from food and drink over a certain time of the day.

Eurasian

Philip Thurau

Philip Thurau is a 10-year old Eurasian boy whose favourite activity is surfing at Big Wave Bay. An avid sports lover, he sees his father as his hero because they do many activities together.

Being a global metropolis, Hong Kong has close to 70,000 Mixed. Most people tend to focus on their physical appearance and language ability. Like local Chinese, some mixed race individuals were born in Hong Kong and can speak fluent Cantonese, including a few KOL and celebrities. Can you name a few examples?

Thai

Bunchom Ping

Having lived in Hong Kong for 31 years, Thai chef Bunchom Ping is a big fan of the local culture. She counts wanton soup noodle as her favourite food and adores Andy Lau because of his look.

Kowloon City is famous for its large Thai community. Other than the numerous Thai restaurants, they are also known for celebrating Songkran, the Thai New Year festival that involves people dousing one another with water.

Pakistani

Aslam Rabia

Not only does Aslam Rabia, an ethnic Pakistani, has a Chinese name, but she also studied the language in secondary school. Now a bio-medical engineer with an impressive qualification and lofty ideal, she hopes to bring scientific knowledge and technology to remote areas and help change lives there.

Pakistan’s national language is Urdu, though many also speak Punjabi. According to Hong Kong’s 2021 Population Census, as many as 70% of the Pakistani youth in the city can read Chinese at an advanced level. That should help them integrate into the mainstream society.

Chinese

Wong Kam Fai

Originally from the Fujian province, Wong Kam Fai was a self-made man who provided for his family of five through the tea trade. Now retired, he sees his wife as the true hero of the household and defers to her on most matters.

Fujian has a deep connection with Hong Kong. The province was the ancestral land of "Hoklo", one of the city’s four main indigenous dialect groups. The characters “Hok” and “Fuk” share the same pronunciation in the Minnan dialect, while many of Hong Kong’s street names reflect the Hoklo’s roots. For example, Fuk Lo Tsun Road in Kowloon City was once the center of the local Hoklo community.
