Reverse Vending Machine

By clustering the installation of reverse vending machines within specific districts, we have made it easier and more economical for vendors to collect plastics, and reduce carbon emissions by streamlining collection routes.

Approach

  • Strengthen partnerships with service providers, NGOs and the government to expand our reverse vending machine network at Link
  • Enable economies of scale in recycling by clustering the installation of reverse vending machines within specific districts. Streamlining collection routes provides an additional benefit of reducing carbon emissions
  • Engage the community by adding the locations of the reverse vending machines into our Park & Dine app, making it more convenient for the community to find the nearest collection point
  • Support our tenants by offering cash rebates, coupons and point rewards in our reverse vending machines. They can be redeemed or used at select tenants across Link properties

Highlights

  • We prioritised Yuen Long and Tseung Kwan O districts for the initial rollout of reverse vending machines. In 2020/2021, we have installed a total of 25 Reverse Vending Machines in our propeties across Hong Kong. 7 of them are Watsons Water's Green Point Smart Water Bottle Reverse Vending Machines, and the other 18 are EPD's Plastic Bottle Reverse Vending Machines
  • In 2020/2021, around 207,000 plastic bottles were collected in Watsons Water's Green Point Smart Water Bottle Reverse Vending Machines, and over 193,000 plastic bottles collected in EPD's Plastic Bottle Reverse Vending Machines
