Link First Generation University Student Scholarship

 

 

 

The Link First Generation University Student Scholarship programme (Link Scholarship) was established in 2015 as part of the Link Together Initiatives. It aims at supporting undergraduates who are the first amongst three generations of their families to study at one of Hong Kong’s universities. Over the past three years, Link REIT has donated HK$7.4 million to support 370 university students.
 
Link Scholarship 2018/19 is open for application for the following periods:
 
• Scholarship for Year 1 University Study:
   a. Secondary School to submit Letter of Intent for nomination: 27 March 2018 – noon, 13 April 2018
   b. Secondary School and Nominee to submit online application: 13 April 2018 – noon, 31 May 2018
 
• Scholarship for Year 2-4 University Study:
   c. University student to submit online application: 1 May 2018 – noon, 12 July 2018
 
Awarded students will be automatically admitted to the Link Scholars Alumni. This is part of the Link Scholarship which the alumni creates a platform for the awarded students to interact and gain exposure through different social and professional engagement activities, providing opportunities to prepare them to enter into society after graduation.
 
Link has appointed The Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) as project consultant and coordinator of Link Scholarship. HKCSS provides support in application enrolment, data collection and verification, liaison, selection criteria setting, interview arrangement, scholarship payment and coordination of activities for Link Scholars Alumni. 
 
 
Link Scholarship Application Details
 
Application Guideline
 
Year 1 University Studies*
Secondary schools are cordially invited to nominate an eligible Secondary Six student for the Link Scholarship of Year 1 University Study. Each school can nominate a Secondary Six student who sits for HKDSE in 2018 for the Link Scholarship and submit the application online. 100 students are offered in this category.
 
Year 2-4 University Studies*
Eligible University students are invited to submit application online. 60 students are offered in this category.
 
 
* Each awarded student will receive a grant of HK$20,000. They can make use of the grant to realize their goals and plans for improving their learning environment and/or seeking further learning opportunities. Awarded students will be automatically admitted to the Link Scholars Alumni, through which Link will provide mentoring, career counselling, corporate visits and volunteering opportunities as well as priority consideration to the company’s internship programme. The awarded students  are eligible to apply for the Link Scholarship in the following year.
 
 

Eligibility

 
Year 1 University Studies
The nominee must be: 
1. A full-time Secondary Six student attending a local secondary school, including government-aided and government secondary schools, aided special schools, Direct Subsidy Scheme schools or private secondary schools;
2. A student who sits in HKDSE in 2018;
3. Academically outstanding and holding an admission offer from a local university* by September 2018;
4. Proactively participating in extra-curricular and community activities as well as committed to community contribution; and
5. The first generation university student of his/her family if he/she receives an admission offer (i.e. his/her grandparents and parents do not hold any degree from any recognised university).
 
Year 2-4 University Studies
The applicant must be:
1. The first amongst three generations of their families (i.e. his/her grandparents and parents do not hold any degree from any university) to study at one of the Hong Kong’s universities*, and is able to provide one of the following:
     a. a reference letter by the principle or teacher of his/her previous secondary school (click here to download the template for reference), or
     b. a declaration* issued by Home Affairs Department of HKSAR (click here to download the template for reference).
2. A full-time student who will continue their full-time bachelor's study at one of the Hong Kong’s universities**;
3. Having a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 3 and eligible for next year’s admission by a Hong Kong university*;
4. Proactively participating in extra-curricular and community activities as well as committed to community contribution;
5. Making good use of the Link Scholarship to enhance learning, and
6. Participated in HKDSE previously and received admission offer from a local university through JUPAS.
 
* Applicants can make the oath at any Home Affairs Enquiry Centre free of charge, declaring they are the first amongst three generation of their family to study at University. 
** Eight institutions funded by the Hong Kong University Grants Committee are (in alphabetical order): City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingnan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Education University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and The University of Hong Kong.
 
 
Selection Process
 
It is a non-means-tested scholarship based on honesty.
 
Year 1 University Studies
First round of assessment will be jointly conducted by Link and HKCSS based on the information submitted by the applicants. Links Scholarship Selection Panel will conduct interviews and group discussion with the nominated students to understand their ambitions and self-development plans.

 

Year 2-4 University Studies

First round of assessment will be jointly conducted by Link and HKCSS based on the applicant’s academic results and his/her level of participation in community service. The income level of the applicant’s family will not be assessed. 40 students for each academic year who score the highest marks in the first round of assessment will be invited for an interview and group discussion to elaborate their ambitions and self-development plans. The Link Scholarship Selection Panel will be responsible for the interview assessment.
 

 

Application Procedure
 
Year 1 University Studies
 
Link has commissioned HKCSS to send an e-invitation by email to school principals of all local secondary schools including government-aided and government secondary schools, aided special schools, Direct Subsidy Scheme schools and private secondary schools.
 
1. Schools must submit a duly completed and signed Letter of Intent for Nomination to HKCSS by sending email to sch@hkcss.org.hk on or before noon, 11 April 2018. HKCSS will then provide a link to online application with a login password to the contact person appointed by the school.
2. After receiving the login password, the contact person has to submit a nomination and complete the application form via the online system on or before noon of 31 May 2018. Late applicaiton will not be considered.
3. HKCSS will consolidate all successful applications. Once an application is verified, HKCSS will invite nominated students who have provided a copy of their university admission offer* to participate in the Link Scholarship interview with the Link Scholarship Selection Panel.
 
Year 2-4 University Studies
 
1. Eligible applicant should submit the online application form between 1 May 2018 and noon, 12 July 2018.
2. HKCSS will consolidate all successful applications, conduct due diligence and first round of assessment, and then invite the top 40 applicants of each academic year for an interview.
 
 
Disbursement of Scholarship
 
Upon completion of the selection process followed by the approval of the Link Scholarship Selection Panel, HKCSS will disburse the Link Scholarship payment (HK$20,000 each) to the awarded student through WiseGiving Charitable Trust.
 
 
Obligation of Awarded Students
 
Awarded students must attend at least two of the Link Scholars Alumni activities, including the scholarship presentation ceremony (if any), volunteer activities and other promotional activities organised by Link. We encourage students to continue their care to our society and participate in community service activities.
 
 
Data Privacy and Use of Personal Information
 
Awarded students, their parents/guardian and schools must give consent to Link for the publication of the names and photos of the students and their schools on the website, related publicity materials and publications of Link’s Programmes***. Other personal details will remain confidential. In accordance with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, Link and HKCSS shall not use or share the personal data of the awarded students for purposes other than the Link’s Programmes***.
